Shannon Dam

Welcome
Previous Pause Next

This pretty dam was once the water supply for the Shannon Mill and town.

Water for the once-thriving town of Shannon and its timber mill was drawn from the Shannon River. The river often dried up in summer so a dam was built upstream of the mill sites in 1949 to ensure summer supplies.

Enjoy a range of recreational activities here including canoeing/kayaking, swimming, cycling and bush walking.

Bushwalking

Shannon Dam Walk Trail

This easy and beautiful walk trail follows the Shannon River between the Shannon Dam and Shannon Campground and can be begun from either end.
Learn more about the Shannon community of the 1950s and 60s from information along the way and look out for remaining traces of the Shannon Mill.

Distance: 4.5km loop  Time:  Allow 2 hours  Trail classification: Class 2

Rocks Walk Trail

The trail begins at the Shannon Dam and passes through karri, jarrah and peppermint forest. The section up and over Mokare’s Rock is steep in places but the view of leafy karri crowns and across the Shannon Basin is magnificent. The wildflowers in spring are spectacular.
The 360m-return spur trail to see the Hollowbutt Karri and the forest views from Smeather’s Rock is worth taking if you have time.
A good level of fitness is recommended.

Distance: 2.5km loop  Time:  Allow 2 hours  Trail classification: Class 3
